San Francisco Chronicle Lists Centro as iPhone Imitator

iPhone and competitors.jpg

Ryan Kim of the San Francisco Chronicle has written an article about the iPhone’s success and how it has spawned a generation of imitators. The Palm Centro is listed as one of the imitator/challengers along with the HTC Touch and the T-Mobile Shadow.

As Dieter emphasizes in his Centro Hands-on, he reminds us that Ed Colligan said in his speech that the Centro is more of a RAZR killer than an iPhone killer. It’s no iPhone killer, and it’s not meant to be. But hey, that’s great if people want to compare the Centro with the iPhone. ;-)

According to the SFC article, Palm’s senior product manager Rob Katcher said that Palm has benefited from the excitement around the iPhone and the way it’s cued people in to touch screens, which is something that Palm Treos have sported for years. Katcher said that Palm is actually emphasizing the Centro’s touch screen even more than originally planned because of the buzz around the iPhone’s screen.

The SFC quotes Katcher:

“The iPhone is $400 and the Centro is $99. They’re in two complete different ballparks,” Katcher said. “Here’s a $99 phone that has a touch screen, has a keyboard, can do e-mail in a thin form. From that perspective, this will be very attractive to people who may not be looking for a smart phone.”

Indeed! The Centro has a lot to offer for the price, and I think that people who are new to feature phones will really like having a phone that is capable of doing so much.
