The Nuance Voice Control service enhances Palm’s new device with a speech-based user interface. Centro users have the unique and powerful ability to control their Centro smartphone with their voice instead of using the keyboard or the stylus. Users simply press one button on the device and speak their request. In this way, Nuance Voice Control delivers single-button access to Web content and messaging, among other features, helping Centro users unlock the full potential of the device’s Web and data capabilities.

I tried the Nuance Voice Control on a Treo 755p and it was really fun to use. It was pretty simple and all I had to do was push the side button and speak my instructions. For example, I wanted to put my dentist appointment in my Calendar. I spoke my dentist’s name and said the date and time. Voila - My dental appointment was in my Calendar and all set up for me. Cool! I also tried the program out to check my local movie listings and to dial a contact.

“Centro offers the power of a smartphone at the price of a standard 12-key cell phone, bringing Palm simplicity, organization and advanced features to a broader audience - ideal for anyone who’s ready to cross over from a standard cell phone to a smartphone,” said Mike Rank, director of developer relations for Palm, Inc. “Nuance Voice Control is particularly valuable for Centro customers utilizing the device’s email, text and instant messaging capabilities because it enhances our full QWERTY keyboard for text entry with the ability to simply dictate and send messages.”

If Centro users enjoy using the Nuance Voice Control service and decide to subscribe after the 30-day free trial, it’ll cost $6.00 a month.
