Brighthand Compares Centro and Treo 500v

Ed Hardy over at Brighthand has done a comparison of the Palm Centro and the Treo 500v. Ed starts out by saying that the two devices have caused some confusion because at first glance they look quite similar. Boyhowdy, do they ever look similar! I’ve confused the two devices, especially when seeing them pictured alone. Even CNET mixed up the Centro and the 500v in their CNET’s first look at the Palm Centro video at Digital Life. CNET’s Rich DeMuro did a first look at the Centro and during the video he told about the Ruby and Onyx colors, showing first a red Centro and then a still shot of a black Treo 500v instead of a black Centro. This was discussed over at the TreoCentral forums in Dieter’s Centro Q&A thread. Someone had put a link to the CNET video and someone else noticed that the connectors on the two devices weren’t the same. Then forum member dkirker said that the connector wasn’t the same because the black device wasn’t a Centro but a Treo 500v. It’s easy to tell when the two devices are side by side like they are in the pic above. Not as easy though here where there are two separate pics of each device like below. You can easily see the connectors aren’t the same. These are screenshots I took from the CNET video and put side by side.

Ed Hardy says that looking closer at the Centro and the 500v, there are wide differences between the two devices.

“The most basic of these is the operating system. The Centro runs the Garnet OS (formerly Palm OS Garnet) while the 500v uses Windows Mobile 6 Standard. Virtually all the other differences are a result of this one.”

“For example, the Palm OS model has a 320-by-320-pixel touchscreen because that’s the highest screen resolution this operating system supports, while the Windows Mobile 6 Standard smartphone has a 320-by-240-pixel, non-touchscreen display because that’s what this operating system has been designed to use.”

Ed also notes that because the 500v has a rectangular screen, not a square one like the Centro, it is the wider of the two. And because of this, there’s room for a slightly larger battery: 1200 mAh vs. 1150 mAh.

Also the Centro uses Palm’s Athena connector for hooking up power and data cables, whereas the 500v has a mini-USB port. And the Centro only has a 1.3 megapixel camera while the Treo 500v has a 2 megapixel camera.
